Bayou St. John Cuff is etched from an 1800's historical map of the bayou and surrounding neighborhood.

Bayou St. John is a natural feature that drained the swampy land of most of Nola into Lake Pontchartrain and it extended much farther than today and colonial era and early 19th-century maps show.

The portion still in existence today was navigable by canoes and similar small vessels, used by Native Americans since Pre-Columbian times.
