SW + SE DC Cuff: Between Two Rivers

Material:

Between Two Rivers traces an early Washington, DC, held between the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.

Adapted from a hand-drawn 1815 map of Washington, the cuff captures the southern reaches of the young city, where the ordered geometry of the street grid meets the irregular edges of the Potomac and the Anacostia River, including what became Navy Yard.

Etched into metal and formed by hand, the historic street plan wraps around the wrist, placing water on either side of the city. The piece reflects Washington at a moment when its familiar avenues and blocks had been laid out, but much of the landscape around them remained defined by river, shoreline, and topography.
